Power wheelchairs are available for indoor and outdoor use. Most electric wheelchairs have indirect steering, for example via a joystick.

Electric wheelchairs are powered by an integrated electric motor with battery. There are models with front-wheel or rear-wheel drive. The seating systems of the wheelchairs can often be individually selected and they can be equipped with various controls. Due to their design, power wheelchairs generally have a high dead weight.
