Respirators are electrically, electromagnetically or pneumatically powered ventilators.

They are suitable for the artificial respiration of people who are unable to breathe properly or cannot breathe at all.

In home use, respirators are mostly used for sleep-related breathing disorders (e.g. sleep apnoea). In this case, the respirator performs "supportive spontaneous breathing". The prerequisite is that the person can still control their breathing rate and depth independently.

Respirators can be found in the Statuatory Health Insurance's Medical Technical Aids Register under product group 14 "Inhalation and respiratory therapy devices".
